Drama day 5: A Sunday of Care and Comfort: Managing Sick Kids
Parenting is a journey filled with surprises, and some Sundays come with unexpected challenges. This week, my two boys, aged 7 and 2, woke up with a persistent cough. While it meant forgoing our usual outings, the day turned into an opportunity to slow down and focus on their comfort and recovery.
Morning: Tender Beginnings
Both boys woke up later than usual, around 8:00 AM, looking tired and clingy. After checking their temperatures (thankfully, no fevers!), I started the day with a warm glass of turmeric milk for each of them. For breakfast, I whipped up some soft idlis and blueberries—easy on their throats and appetizing enough to entice them to eat.
With cuddles and cartoons, the morning passed slowly. I kept the younger one entertained with his favorite toy cars while the elder one enjoyed a quiet storybook session in his bed.
Midday: Nutrition and Rest
For lunch, I prepared a soothing bowl of black rice kanji and with soft boiled vegetables, which both boys managed to eat without much fuss. Post-lunch, I encouraged them to nap, knowing rest is vital for recovery. Thankfully, both obliged, giving me a chance to tidy up the house and prepare for the rest of the day.
Afternoon: Gentle Playtime
Post-nap, the boys seemed a little brighter but still needed care. We spent the afternoon doing light, calm activities. The 7-year-old tried his hand at coloring while the toddler sat beside him, scribbling away with crayons. Soft background music created a peaceful ambiance.
To keep their hydration up, I offered ORS and fruit juices. I also used this time to introduce some steam inhalation for both of them, which helped ease their coughs.
Evening: Winding Down
Dinner was another comforting affair—khichdi for all, paired with a dollop of ghee. After dinner, I gave them a warm sponge bath to soothe their bodies before bedtime. The bath seemed to relax them, and by 8:30 PM, we were ready for a short bedtime story. I applied VapoRub to both of them and tucked them in bed after offering each of them a warm glass of turmeric milk.
Reflections
Parenting on days like this requires patience and flexibility. While I missed our usual Sunday fun, the slower pace reminded me of the importance of being present and nurturing during tough times. Watching them fall asleep, feeling a little better, was the most rewarding part of the day.
Tips for Caring for Sick Kids:
Stay Hydrated: Offer warm fluids like soups, juices, teas, or plain water with ORS.
Prioritize Rest: Ensure your kids get plenty of sleep to help their bodies recover.
Keep It Simple: Stick to light activities and easy-to-digest meals.
Monitor Symptoms: Stay vigilant for any signs that might require a doctor’s visit.
Every parent faces days like these, and while they can be challenging, they’re also an opportunity to strengthen the bond with your little ones through love and care.
